If there’s one thing Bollywood does well, it’s weddings. From the vibrant coloured sarees and ethnic wear to the gorgeous jewelry and nose pins, nothing is more iconic than Bollywood’s blushing brides. There’s often a rainstorm, always A LOT of drama, and (usually) a happy ending. But one main stay of the Bollywood wedding is gorgeous looks. Below, we’ve broken down four of our favourite wedding scenes by look. (Full disclaimer: there’s going to be A LOT of Kajol on this list, because we love her)
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
This entire film centers on a wedding, which means a plethora of songs, gorgeous clothing and Shah Rukh Khan for us to choose from. While not the wedding event itself, the song Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna offers some of the best looks of the film. In this scene, Simran (played by Kajol) sings to her betrothed while outfitted in a lime green lehenga with gold detailing. The colour is especially vibrant when paired with her gold jewelry.
While green may not be the first choice for everyone, the bold colour stands out in this film, as it differs from the traditional red and pink sarees worn by brides. It also helps Kajol to stand out amongst the other actors in the scene. As we’ve seen from the Queen’s fashion choice at the recent royal wedding, (lime) green is making a comeback.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Another iconic Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan film with more outfits to choose from. While not her wedding, during the song Yeh Ladka Hai Allah, Kajol – wearing a bold yellow suit with silver detailing– almost overshadows the bride. The pop of colour manages to be both vibrant and soft, and perfectly compliments Khan’s own black suit with matching silver details. This yellow is perfect for a summer wedding – as both a guest and a bride. Don’t want to steer too far away from tradition with a yellow designer saree on your big day? This colour would be perfect for events such as the Mehndi party or Sangeet (where you too can stand out on the dance floor like Kajol).
Ok, this scene still gets us. Devdas is one the most iconic Bollywood films and one of the most tragic love stories, and this scene – in which Paro gets married – is heartbreaking. Paro marries a man she doesn’t love in order to maintain honour and tradition in her family, so it’s only fitting that her outfit would be just as traditional. Though a sad moment for Paro (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan), Bachchan stuns as a Bengali bride in this traditional red and gold saree during her wedding. Her look is only enhanced by the intricate embroidery and detailing, which glimmers as she’s led through her childhood home by Khan (matching her glistening eyes throughout the scene). It’s as if everything about her is crying.
Veere Di Wedding
Although this film hasn’t come out yet (it’s set to be released on June 1, 2018), we already know it’s going to be iconic. A modern film centered around four friends who are real woman (with one who has a real aversion to marriage and her impending wedding), is a breath of fresh air in the Bollywood film industry – and it’s sure to be a breath of fresh air in our closest. From the promotional photos and movie trailer alone, we know that we’ll have modern and unique wedding outfit inspiration to last us the whole summer.
